Organisation Description
I.E.S. Profesor Antonio Cabrera Pérez is a Public Educational Center in Telde (Gran Canaria, Spain) that offers basic and medium Vocational Training and Higher Education. IES PROFESOR ANTONIO CABRERA PÉREZ is located in a peripheral neighborhood of the city of Telde in Gran Canaria, close to large centers of economic expansion. However, many of our students come from different villages on the island. The reason for this is the educational offer in different fields. There are more than 70 teachers spread over five teaching departments in the fields of Health, Transport and Vehicles, Marine and Fishing Orientation, Electricity and Electronics, and Community Service. In addition, the management team is committed to the internationalization of our center. What is more, this academic year, we will transition into an Integrated Vocational Training Centre. We have also started to
implement Dual Training.
Our centre participates in “La Red Canaria de Escuelas Promotor as de la Salud” and in la “Red Canaria de Centros Educativos para la Sostenibilidad”.This school year the IES ANTONIO CABRE RAPÉREZ runs the “Professional and Entrepreneurial Nextwork” and it takes part in two innovation projects: “Formaciónen centralitas programables” and
“Automatizacióny monitorizaciónen Acuacultura”.We continue working with the following strategic areas: “Promotion of health and education for emotional development”, “Gender equality and Education on sexuality”, as well as the main line of social, cultural and Heritage of Canary Islands. Our major challenge is to increase the number of students enrolled. For this reason, offering innovative methodologies is necessary, as well as the training of the teaching team and the exchange of
good practices carried out in other centres. We emphasize innovative teaching, dropout prevention, and the involvement of teachers, students, families and regional enterprises.
Our students come from the urban/rural environment (from Telde and neighboring villages) and are of different economic and social situations. 5% of all children in school come from divorced families. Furthermore, between 10% and 30% of our students, depending on the professional field, originate from various countries and cultures, thereby enhancing our cultural diversity. Additionally, some of our students hail from African nations facing extreme circumstances, having reached our island in small boats and lacking prior academic training, which exacerbates the culture shock.
